12/7/2011 West Calcasieu Port awards contractor contract for barge basin expansion project
 

The West Calcasieu Port board of commissioners voted this week to award the contract for the expansion dredging of the port's west barge basin to.Apollo Environmental Strategies, Inc. of Beaumont, Texas.

The successful bid of $2,117,835 was the lowest among eight bids received by the port during its competitive public bid process.

The West Calcasieu Port is accepting bids for its barge basin expansion project, port officials said.

   The port began accepting sealed bids Friday and will continue through mid-November, Port Director Lynn Hohensee said.

West Calcasieu Port officials announced today that it has begun seeking bids for expansion dredging of the port's west barge basin located along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.

"The West Cal Port will begin advertising this week in local and state publications to alert maritime excavation contractors and other interested parties that we are seeking qualified, competitive bids for the dredging project,” said West Calcasieu Port Director Lynn Hohensee.  "The bids will be formally opened on Nov. 16, 2011.”

7/18/2011 Sulphur businessman named to West Calcasieu Port board of commissioners
 
SULPHUR, La, July 18, 2011 – Sulphur businessman Dave  F. Aguillard has been appointed to the West Calcasieu Port five-person board of commissioners by the Ward Four Calcasieu Parish Police Jurors.
 
Aguillard’s appointment was confirmed by resolution of the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury on July 7, 2011.  His term will expire in October 2014.  
 
Aguillard assumed a port board commissioner position that was previously held by Brent Clement, who resigned to fill a vacant position on the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury.  Clement had been president of the WCP board at the time of his resignation.

 The 190-acre West Cal Port, as it is locally called, is located 12 miles south of Interstate 10 on La. 27 in Sulphur, and has been an integral part of West Calcasieu's growth and expansion in recent years.
"All you have to do is go back into our regional history and see the critical transportation role of our indigent waterways to the industrial and commercial growth of our five-parish region,” Hohensee explained.

2/25/2010 West Calcasieu Port nominates 4 projects for FY2011 Appropriations Act
 The West Calcasieu Port has submitted four infrastructure improvement projects totaling $15.75 million for consideration in the FY2011 Appropriations Act.

If Lynn E. Hohensee, West Calcasieu Port director, had three wishes, he knows what at least one of them would be.

8/3/2009 ACT No 474 - Establish Ports of Louisiana Tax Credits
 

The West Calcasieu Port in association with the Ports Association of Louisiana (PAL) worked diligently during the recent Louisiana Legislative session to secure passage of a significant piece of legislation that allows tax incentives for businesses locating in and shipping through Louisiana ports. In the final days of the legislative session, the provisions of H.B. 744 were combined into H.B. 215. HB 215 now provides for a Ports of Louisiana Infrastructure Tax Credit Program in an amount equal to the private investment in qualified public port facilities to be taken by a private investor at 5 percent per year. Additionally it provides for a $5 per ton tax credit to Louisiana-based business for the Import and Export Tax Credit Program for “qualified cargo” “Break Bulk and Containerized cargo” imported or exported through Louisiana public ports.

7/14/2009 Dredging project under way at West Calcasieu Port basin
 The much anticipated dredging of the West Calcasieu Port’s west barge basin should be complete by August, the port’s top official recently told the Sulphur Kiwanis Club.

Director Lynn Hohensee said the $2.31 million project is being funded primarily through state and federal monies with $50,000 each from the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury and the city of Sulphur.

Port Investor Tax Credit grants tax credits against income taxes equivalent to 5% per year of the total capital costs associated with qualifying port infrastructure projects, for a  twenty-year period (essentially reimbursing the costs over 20 years).

6/11/2009 Ports finding themselves in dire straits
 
Ports all around Louisiana are in dire straits. Funding in many ports is exhausted.
“The till is about empty in the ports right now,” said Lynn Hohensee, director of the West Calcasieu Port, at Wednesday’s meeting of the Sulphur Kiwanis Club.   Currently, the total amount of funding available from the state is around $23 million but that represents a shortfall of around $55 million from the projected financial need, according to Hohensee. And monies from the state do not even represent a majority of the funds for Louisiana’s ports.

The three projects included in the WCP's request are the expansion of the port's existing west barge basin, the construction of shoreline bulkheading and the installation of perimeter security fencing.

1/16/2009 House and Senate Committees on Transportation, Highways and Public Works visit West Cal Port.
 

The West Calcasieu Port was one of 10 south Louisana ports that received a visit from the House and Senate Committees on Transportation, Highways and Public Workson Jan. 16, as part of a first-hand effort for the state legislators to see what the port needs are and how money appropriated is being spent. The West Calcasieu Port has launched its new website (http://www.westcalport.com/).  “Growing the port and developing the economy of Southwest Louisiana is very important to our board of directors,” said Larry Mashburn, president of the WCP board. “But, in this day and age, if you aren't highly visible on the internet, you really are not in the race."

 Sulphur-resident Wilmer Dugas has been appointed to the West Calcasieu Port five-person board of directors by the Sulphur City Council effective Oct. 1, 2008.

The West Calcasieu Port has retained BYL International, Inc. to facilitate the development of the facility's long-range Port Strategic Plan.

06/20/2006West Calcasieu Port names Hohensee port director
 West Calcasieu Port officials recently announced that the facility's board of directors has contracted with Lynn E. Hohensee to serve as the facility's new port director, effective June 1, 2006.
